Pakistan faced unprecedented floods in 2023, with rainfall reaching 3 to 5 times the 30-year national average, submerging up to one-third of the country under water. The catastrophic event claimed over 1,590 lives, including 552 children, and affected approximately 33 million people—half of whom were children. The receding floodwaters are now revealing extensive damage: over 2 million homes, nearly 24,000 schools, and 1,460 health facilities have been compromised. The agricultural sector, the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, has suffered immensely with an estimated loss of 8.3 million acres of crops, exacerbating the food insecurity crisis. This disaster has surpassed the devastation of the 2010 flash floods, leaving countless in makeshift accommodations, urgently needing shelter, livelihood support, and healthcare.
In response to this emergency, Droplets of Mercy initiated a project to provide essential rehabilitation assistance to approximately 1,000 individuals from around 100 households, encompassing women, men, children, and the elderly. This intervention, spanning housing, education, water, and livelihood sectors, aims to reduce the vulnerability of the displaced and disadvantaged communities, enhance their management capacities, and directly combat poverty through various means, including short-term employment opportunities in reconstruction efforts.
